At this year’s Celtic Connections festival Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening played a special set for BBC ALBA’s ‘Seirm’ music programme. They feature in the first episode of a new series, due to air on March 2nd at 21.00 GMT. The programme will be available to view after broadcast.
The Darkening’s album ‘Cloud Horizons’ is included in Americana-UK’s Folk Round Up this month. Previous reviewers, including BBC Radio 2 and 6Music’s Mark Radcliffe, have compared some of the album to Led Zeppelin. Now from Americana-UK: “Infused with a pagan spirit it recalls, in places, the ‘British Tribal Music’ phase of Hawkwind.”
A terrific review here by David Chalfen for Americana-UK. Now, here’s an idea! –
“Perhaps the showstopping example of the current muse to these ears (and as Folk Show listeners will note, to those of Mark Radcliffe too) is ‘Long for Light’. It is quite the compelling barnstormer with tinges of Led Zep’s Kashmir and Battle of Evermore. To this greedy reviewer it has the potential to be spun out – in true ’70s style- to 10 glorious thudding minutes.”
As Kathryn & The Darkening’s UK autumn tour draws to a close, here are some dates for your diary for next year! For more details check Live Dates. Some concerts may not be on sale quite yet. Ticket links will be updated when the event goes on sale.
Conjuring up the spirits of the past, Kathryn & The Darkening have just released this new video to accompany the track ‘Caelestis’ from the new album, Cloud Horizons.
Amy and Stef take the vocals in Stef’s new treatment of Latin words from around 1900 years ago, found inscribed on a stone found at Carvoran in Northumberland. The mentions of Syria and Libya reflect the diversity of the troops stationed along Hadrian’s Wall at this time.
The band are set to play Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow on 1st February. Programme just announced. Tickets on sale 11th October.
In the past month UK and international sales of ‘Cloud Horizons’ have meant that Kathryn & The Darkening have gone straight in at No. 4 on the Official Folk Albums Chart, compiled by the Official Charts Company in partnership with English Folk Expo.
Kathryn joins host Matthew Bannister for an exclusive interview in Folk on Foot’s ‘Official Folk Albums Chart Show’. The programme is available to watch on the English Folk Expo website, as well as the Official Charts Company website.
