Kathryn at Hexham Gathering 2017

A new generation of musical talent is proudly presented by Kathryn at three village halls in Northumberland. (And of course she’ll be playing some tunes too!). Stocksfield Community Centre, 25 May: Grace Smith (fiddle, clog dancing), Jordan Aikin (whistle) & Alasdair Paul (guitar), Elizabeth Quigley (harp), Abi Rees (accordion), Abbey Tilley (North East songs). Allendale Village Hall, 26 May: Cream Tees, Michael Biggins (accordion), Scott Turnbull (guitar), Lexie Wilson (harp), Wingrove Singers. Wark Town Hall and Mechanics Institute, 28 May: Michael Biggins, Scott Turnbull, Wingrove Singers, and Lexie Wilson. All concerts start at 7.30pm and tickets (£10/£6) are available from Queen’s Hall Hexham

Newcastle Poetry Festival

On Wednesday 10 May Kathryn performs with Scotland’s National Poet, Jackie Kay, as part of an evening of poetry and music. This will be the premiere of their first collaboration and is based on poems from Jackie’s new collection, Bantam (Picador, 2017). Bantam is a collection of work about Kay’s three generations of family in a book that crosses many different borders. More details of the evening’s programme at Sage Gateshead can be found here

Uproot Festival 6 – 8 April

Celebrating Hull 2017 UK City of Culture, BBC Radio 3 takes up residence at Hull Truck Theatre for Uproot, a three-day festival of ground-breaking music which celebrates Hull UK City of Culture 2017, including live concerts and special Radio 3 broadcasts exploring the rich musical heritage of the city and its international cultural links. Four live concerts will be presented by Kathryn, who will also perform on a special Uproot edition of Radio 3’s In Tune programme. 

BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards

At the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards at the Royal Albert Hall on 5th April, Kathryn will be chatting backstage to the nominees for the Young Folk Award 2017 and introducing their performances. Honorary Master of Music at Durham University

Kathryn will be made an Honorary Master of Music at Durham University’s Winter Congregation ceremony on 12th January. It’s a huge honour for Kathryn to be recognised for her creativity and for her support of music and arts in the region. 

Happy festive season! live World on 3 from Newcastle – 2017 touring

Wishing you happy music-filled holidays, wherever you may be! Tune in to BBC Radio 3 on December 30th at 23:00 GMT for World on 3 live from the Bridge Hotel, Newcastle. Kathryn will be presenting the programme and will be bringing her pipes and fiddle! She will be joined by the fabulous Monster Ceilidh Band and The Young ‘Uns, as well as the lucky winners of our recent mailing list subscribers’ competition. Please note some venues may not have tickets on sale quite yet and the concert may not be listed on the venues’ websites.

New album alert! + Magnetic North East launch night

“Water of Tyne” by Kathryn Tickell & Friends is to be released on 28th October. Kathryn’s proud and pleased to have been involved in producing a beautiful selection of songs and tunes for this album, an initiative by Magnetic North East. Plans for the launch night for Magnetic North East continue apace. Guests (so far) at Sage Gateshead on 4th November: Kingsmen Sword Dancers, Superfolkus, Paul Smith (of Maximo Park), Alistair Anderson, The Baghdaddies, Bonnie Shaw, Charlie Hardwick and the world premiere of Song Of The Tyne, a new song written by award-winning author David Almond.
