Kathryn Tickell to be awarded Queen’s Medal for Music

Kathryn Tickell is to be awarded the prestigious Queen’s Medal for Music. The award will be formally announced by Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, at a ceremony at The Sage Gateshead on Monday 26th January.

Approved by the Queen, this annual award is presented to an individual (or group of musicians) who is judged to have had a major influence on the musical life of the nation. The nominating process for the recipient of the medal is overseen by a Music Committee under the chairmanship of the Master of The Queen”s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. The committee members are Michael Berkeley, Nicholas Kenyon, William Lyne, the Honourable Sir Humphrey Maud, Richard Morrison and Lord Moser. Previous recipients have included the Welsh tenor Bryn Terfel, composer Judith Weir and the conductor Sir Charles Mackerras (winner of the first ever Queen’s Medal for Music in 2005).

Speaking of the announcement and Kathryn’s work, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies said, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to present the Queen”s Medal to Kathryn Tickell as she is not only the foremost Northumbrian Pipes player, a great composer and a wonderful all-round musician, but for her work in music education and in putting the pipes and the music of her own part of England back among the public where it belongs, and also spreading a love of this music throughout the whole world.” Kathryn will be presented with the Medal itself in a private audience with The Queen later this year.

The Sage Gateshead’s acclaimed youth folk ensemble, Folkestra, will perform live at a special event to celebrate the announcement at The Sage Gateshead on 26th January. Folkestra, which was founded by and is still directed by Kathryn Tickell, is a unique collaborative group whose repertoire includes traditional music and members” own compositions. With two successful CDs and a growing national reputation for energetic live performances, Folkestra has performed at numerous concerts and festivals across the country, from Towersey to Edinburgh, and most recently at the BBC Proms first ever Folk Day in 2008, performing a specially commissioned piece written by Kathryn herself.

Kathryn Tickell was recently appointed Artistic Director of Folkworks, one of the founding partners of The Sage Gateshead. In this role, which she will take up from September 2009, Kathryn will be responsible for providing artistic leadership, advice and inspiration for the folk music programme within The Sage Gateshead, and for other Folkworks projects taking place regionally, nationally and internationally, including the annual programme of Summer Schools.

Kathryn Tickell is a composer, performer and successful recording artist whose work is deeply rooted to the landscape and people of Northumbria. She also works collaboratively across many genres, making her work contemporary and exciting, and putting her firmly at the forefront of the current folk music revival. In 2008 she became the first folk musician in history to be commissioned to write a piece for the BBC Proms. It was written for The Sage Gateshead’s unique collaborative regional youth ensemble Folkestra (of which Kathryn remains Music Director), Muzsikás, London Sinfonietta and London Young Musicians. One of the foremost composers of our time and Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, composed a piece especially for Kathryn, commissioned by The Sage Gateshead and premiered with musicians from Northern Sinfonia in October 2006 and aired on BBC Radio 3.

Winner of BBC Radio 2 Folk Award’s Musician of the Year in 2005, Kathryn was the subject of a Channel 5 television documentary ‘Kathryn Tickell’s Northumbria’, which is being broadcast again this Sunday (18th January) on Sky Arts 1 at 8pm, and has made numerous TV and radio appearances. In July 2007, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by University of Northumbria for her outstanding and inspirational achievements.

Kathryn to be new Artistic Director of Folkworks

Here follows a news release from The Sage Gateshead:

10/11/2008

Globally acclaimed Northumbrian musician, Kathryn Tickell is to be new Artistic Director of Folkworks.

From September 2009 Kathryn will be responsible for providing artistic leadership, advice and inspiration for the folk music programme within The Sage Gateshead, and for other Folkworks projects taking place regionally, nationally and internationally, including the annual programme of Summer Schools, and The Sage Gateshead’s high energy youth folk ensemble, Folkestra, which was a smash hit at their televised 2008 BBC Proms debut.

Today Kathryn said, “I have been involved with Folkworks since the very beginning, twenty years ago, and I’m totally delighted to be able to play a role in its future. The Artistic Directorship is an exciting post and I already have lots of ideas of potential projects!”

The news was announced at a Gala Concert on 9th November to celebrate twenty years almost to the day since Folkworks was formed in 1988 by Ros Rigby and Alistair Anderson as a pioneering development agency for folk music in the North of England. Folkworks’ early achievement in establishing Folk and Traditional music centre stage in the concert halls of the world alongside classical, rock and world music, often bringing together musicians from different, complementary backgrounds, grew from a programme that included the promotion of regional and national tours, international collaborations, festivals, training for teachers and schools, and establishing a youth summer school which has inspired thousands of young musicians, some of whom, such as Nancy Kerr, Robert Harbron, Rachel and Becky Unthank and others, have gone on to make professional careers in music. Northumbria remains the only region in England to have its own instrument, the Northumbrian Pipes, of which Kathryn is a virtuoso player.

Kathryn Tickell is a composer, performer and successful recording artist whose work is deeply rooted to the landscape and people of Northumbria. But she also works collaboratively across many genres, making her work contemporary and exciting, and putting her firmly at the forefront of the current folk music revival. This year she became the first folk musician in history commissioned to write a piece for the BBC Proms. Speaking about why he wrote the work for Kathryn, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies said: “In admiration and respect for her work in making her home county come alive with a re-awakened awareness of its own musical heritage, and of inexhaustible developments and transformations of its traditions.”

Winner of BBC Radio 2 Folk Award’s Musician of the Year in 2005, Kathryn was the subject of a Channel 5 television documentary ‘Kathryn Tickell’s Northumbria’ and has made numerous TV and radio appearances. In July 2007, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by University of Northumbria for her outstanding and inspirational achievements. The citation for the award said: “One of Kathryn”s most important and enduring contributions is as a composer. Her work is rooted in the musical thinking and practice of Northumberland, but it is also highly innovative in harmony, in rhythm and arrangement. Her music has been described as ”a force for renewal, transforming traditional music from within the tradition’.”

A young Kathryn Tickell performed at the launch of Folkworks in November 1988 and she has been involved on a regular basis in Folkworks’ performance and education projects over the past two decades as well as developing her highly successful international career as performer, composer and teacher. Her versatility is such that she was also commissioned by The Sage Gateshead to work with saxophonist Andy Sheppard to write Music for a New Crossing, which was performed live to celebrate the opening to the public of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in September 2001, and also played a major role in The Sage Gateshead’s opening weekend in December 2004.

Current Folkworks Artistic Director Alistair Anderson explains why Kathryn is the right person to succeed him, “Kathryn Tickell is the ideal person to take the work of Folkworks forward. Not only is she a world class performer, she is also absolutely committed to passing on her skills and her love of the music, to the next generation be it at a village school or at university degree level. Furthermore, because of her links with the tradition through her extended family she has a deep understanding of the many ways the music can engage with communities. I am delighted to be handing the torch on to Kathryn.”

Anthony Sargent, General Director of The Sage Gateshead echoed that sentiment, saying, “There can be no doubt that Britain’s musical landscape has been profoundly enriched by the extraordinary pioneering first two decades of Folkworks, the visionary brainchild of Alistair Anderson and Ros Rigby, and Kathryn Tickell — herself a musician of unique breadth and depth — is absolutely the perfect person to develop that legacy in fresh directions for the 21st Century.”

Wales and rural touring in Northumberland, Co Durham and Cumbria

The Kathryn Tickell Band makes a rare foray to the west coast of Wales with visits to Cardigan and Aberystwyth this week, then travelling on to the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford-on Avon. Stamford Arts Centre then hosts the band in late November. In late November and early December Kathryn and Peter also tour rural venues in Northumberland, Cumbria and Co Durham. For details of all concerts please see ‘Performances’ section. Some are already sold out, so please check with each venue before setting out.

The band enjoyed very complimentary audiences at a number of full venues over the last month or so, at Ingleton Folk Weekend, Alford Manor, Halesworth Arts Festival and Le Nouveau Pavillon, Nantes. A big thank you to the people involved in putting on great programmes of work and looking after artists so well – always warmly appreciated!

September dates and Kathryn Tickell’s Northumbria

The Kathryn Tickell Band will be venturing forth to some beautiful locations this September, including Ripon’s Holy Trinity Church (Ripon International Festival, 13th September) and the wilds of Dumfriesshire at The Hairth festival (21st September), before presenting ‘Kathryn Tickell’s Northumbria’ at The Sage Gateshead on 27th September.

‘Kathryn Tickell’s Northumbria’ is a personal celebration of family connections, music, song and dance of Northumberland and the Borders. A special element that Kathryn has been introducing to her live work is the use of the spoken word, directly drawn from family reminiscences. In particular, her mother’s stories of a rural Northumbrian childhood are retold by Kathryn. Her mother, Kathleen, grew up on Willow Bog Farm in the Warksburn area of Northumberland back in the 1940s and 50s; her warm memories paint a special picture of life in Northumberland through the eyes of a young girl. The remote location and the connections made through music, dance, song and storytelling forged a lifetime of friendships.

The Sage Gateshead event promises to be a truly family occasion as Kathryn is joined on stage by her father Mike Tickell (Northumbrian song) and by brother Peter (fiddle and guitar).

The full line up for the evening as follows:

  • Kathryn Tickell – Northumbrian pipes, fiddle, voice
  • Peter Tickell – fiddle, guitar
  • Julian Sutton – melodeon
  • Joss Clapp – acoustic bass, guitar, voice
  • Corrina Hewat (Bachue, The Unusual Suspects) — voice & harp
  • James Mackintosh (Shooglenifty, Capercaillie) – percussion
  • Amy Thatcher — clog dancing, accordion
  • Mike Tickell — Northumbrian song

Kathryn Tickell’s Northumbria at Hall One of The Sage Gateshead on Saturday 27 September commences at 7.30pm and tickets are priced at £16.50 (concessions are available) and can be purchased by contacting the ticket office on (0191) 443 4661 or via www.thesagegateshead.org

Proms thanks, BBC2, BBC Radio 4, and other media things

Thank you for all the best wishes – and then congratulations – for Kathryn’s new composition at the BBC Proms on 20th July. It was a wonderful afternoon for the North East, with the young players of Folkestra inspiring a great audience response. The Royal Albert Hall resounded to the finale: ‘Another successful fusion came from the Northumbrian piper and fiddler Kathryn Tickell, with the world premiere of Confluence, a work involving Muzsikás, all the classical players, and the impressive teenage musicians of Folkestra.’ Robin Denselow, The Guardian
